“Steak” What you need to know

This is my latest book to read and I would suggest you read it but in the meantime let me give you a quick rundown of the first few chapters and what you need to be aware of when feeding yourself and the family.

The title is “Steak” by Mark Schatzker One Man’s Search for the World’s Tastiest Piece of Beef

I have learned a lot from the book and I am only on the second chapter. I almost wish I had not read this book because I am now evaluating beef like I have never done before. I ate at Outback Steak House tonight and after reading this book I am applying judgment criteria that I never used.

Eating beef at any restaurant is a letdown after eating our Lowline Angus (as opposed to regular Angus commodity beef raised in feed lots), grass-fed, non-chemical beef that Judy and I raise on our ranch here in Texas.

Tonight’s meal left a void on my taste buds. I ordered a rib eye steak without any of the restaurants seasonings, which usually include MSG and other flavorings. MSG is used to make average to poor food taste better by tricking our taste buds. The steak tonight was mushy, no taste, bland, and not beefy. Even the horseradish sauce did little to improve the taste.

Beef in the US and Canada is probably the most abused food that is sold in grocery stores anywhere in the world and we fall into the trap of using our special brands of seasonings or making our own seasonings. We burn the outside of the beef with a fire that is to hot and cover it on both sides with flavor enhancers. I challenge you to cook meat without seasonings at a lower temperature for a longer period time of cooking and then think about what you have prepared.

Unfortunately if you do this with store bought beef you are going to be disappointed for the following reasons. I have known many of the chemicals that are used on cows, chicken, and pork for years but I was unaware that there were a lot more chemicals than I had ever imagined.

Mark Schatzker has reported all the good, bad, and ugly secrets of the beef industry. I am going to fill you in on these chemicals so that you can begin to think about how you should improve your life and that of your family.

Mark interviewed Allen Williams PhD meat scientist retired. He retired because as a professor he did a study for a pharmaceutical corporation that wanted a new product for pregnancy detection tested with the idea that with university approval the FDA would approve this new product. After testing this product he discovered that it did not work and he was going to report as such in an upcoming conference.

He was told by the his boss, the head of the department, that since the corporation paid for the study he could not report his findings (we have found this to be true with land grant universities as they try to raise money to fund their graduate programs. They simply can’t be trusted). When Allen discovered the dishonesty of university studies he retired.

Mark asked Allen what was wrong with all the steak that he had eaten in Texas and Oklahoma on his trip to write the book.

The following is a summary of what is wrong with beef that you buy in a grocery store today.

Allen said that there was a ninety nine plus percentage that all the meat mark had eaten was raise in the conventional manner. It was grown on a ranch, implanted with a growth hormone – most likely Ralgrow, or Synovex implanted when it was 2 to 3 months old, taken rudely from its mother at seven to eight months (actually most of the ranchers that I know take the babies from their mother at 6 months of age) and sold in an auction barn. For the next few months it most likely was put on grass and more hormones would have been injected. At 750 tom 800 pounds and about 12 to 16 months of age it was taken to a feed lot to start eating flaked corn, plus it received two more hormone implants along with a beta-agonist – like Optaflexx which cause even more muscle mass.

Is it any wonder why 7 and 8 year old girls are developing their sex characteristics 5 to 7 years before they are supposed to develop them?

Corn is an unnatural food for cows (GMO corn is even worse) and it can kill cattle. It can cause the liver to abscess, excessive gas that inflates the rumen (one of the cows digestive stomachs) to such an extent that the pressure causes the lungs to collapse so that the cow suffocates, and it causes acidosis that creates the super E-coli and causes the cow to digest the endometrial lining of its gut.

Roughly 98 percent of cattle survive to go to the packing plant because antibiotics are mixed in with the feeds to keep the liver and guts from failing. On top of all this the cows are stressed from standing in mud or dust and their own poop. They see their buddies die and hauled off every day. They produce cortisol, the stress hormone. They are full of adrenalin and their muscles and guts are full of lactic acid. Is it any wonder that meat tastes bad?

On the other hand people have been eating this “stuff” so long that they don’t realize that it tastes so bad.

I have mentioned before that when eating jams and jellies you are eating hormones from cattle because the cartilage from the cows in processed to create gelatin for deserts. The implants are not removed when the processing starts. Again is it any wonder why young girls develop to early?

I feel you must know what agriculture and food manufactures are doing to you through our food supply to cause premature aging and death through poor unhealthy food.

I strongly suggest that you buy all food locally from people you can trust. My wife and I will never sell compromised beef to our customers and the people I know that sell produce will not compromise the lives of their customers.

Eating Healthy Foods is now a Mental Disorder!

Just treating the old diseases like heart attacks, type 2 diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, allergies, flu (with vaccines) and degenerative conditions does not bring in enough money to satisfy the voracious appetite of Big Pharma to tear every dine out of the US population that they can get their grubby hands around.

Big Pharma continues to invent new diseases just so they can grab more than their fair share of profits. It is bad enough that toxic chemical agriculture and industrial food manufactures are killing us with poor quality food, but now those of us that want to eat better than junk food are labeled as having a mental disorder.

The following head line appeared in the Guardian in England.

Healthy food obsession sparks rise in new eating disorder

Fixation with healthy eating can be sign of serious psychological disorder

By Amelia Hill in the Observer, Sunday 16 August 2009

The following quote would be funny if it wasn’t so serious. The end result is that Big Pharma is now pushing psychotropic drugs to treat this disease.

Eating disorder charities are reporting a rise in the number of people suffering from a serious psychological condition characterized by an obsession with healthy eating.

The condition, orthorexia nervosa, affects equal numbers of men and women, but sufferers tend to be aged over 30, middle-class and well-educated.

The condition was named by a Californian doctor, Steven Bratman, in 1997, and is described as a “fixation on righteous eating”. Until a few years ago, there were so few sufferers that doctors usually included them under the catch-all label of “Ednos” – eating disorders not otherwise recognized. Now, experts say, orthorexics take up such a significant proportion of the Ednos group that they should be treated separately.

“I am definitely seeing significantly more orthorexics than just a few years ago,” said Ursula Philpot, chair of the British Dietetic Association’s mental health group. “Other eating disorders focus on quantity of food but orthorexics can be overweight or look normal. They are solely concerned with the quality of the food they put in their bodies, refining and restricting their diets according to their personal understanding of which foods are truly ‘pure’.”

Orthorexics commonly have rigid rules around eating. Refusing to touch sugar, salt, caffeine, alcohol, wheat, gluten, yeast, soya, corn and dairy foods is just the start of their diet restrictions. Any foods that have come into contact with pesticides, herbicides or contain artificial additives are also out.

The obsession about which foods are “good” and which are “bad” means orthorexics can end up malnourished. Their dietary restrictions commonly cause sufferers to feel proud of their “virtuous” behavior even if it means that eating becomes so stressful their personal relationships can come under pressure and they become socially isolated.

“The issues underlying orthorexia are often the same as anorexia and the two conditions can overlap but orthorexia is very definitely a distinct disorder,” said Philpot. “Those most susceptible are middle-class, well-educated people who read about food scares in the papers, research them on the internet, and have the time and money to source what they believe to be purer alternatives.”

Deanne Jade, founder of the National Centre for Eating Disorders, said: “There is a fine line between people who think they are taking care of themselves by manipulating their diet and those who have orthorexia. I see people around me who have no idea they have this disorder. I see it in my practice and I see it among my friends and colleagues.”

Jade believes the condition is on the increase because “modern society has lost its way with food”. She said: “It’s everywhere, from the people who think it’s normal if their friends stop eating entire food groups, to the trainers in the gym who [promote] certain foods to enhance performance, to the proliferation of nutritionists, dieticians and naturopaths [who believe in curing problems through entirely natural methods such as sunlight and massage].

“And just look in the bookshops – all the diets that advise eating according to your blood type or metabolic rate. This is all grist for the mill to those looking for proof to confirm or encourage their anxieties around food.”

It appears that the goal of main stream news (TV, newspapers, etc), medicine, drug corporations, and industrial food manufactures is control of people so that they will blindly follow what they are “told” so the income levels of corporations will not fall.

The following is a comment from Mike Adams the Health Ranger.

There is a huge danger to those who run our consumption-based society because consumption depends on ignorance combined with suggestibility. For people to keep blindly buying foods, medicines, health insurance and consumer goods, they need to have their higher brain functions switched off. Processed junk foods laced with toxic chemicals just happens to achieve that rather well. Why do you think dead, processed foods remain the default meals in public schools, hospitals and prisons? It’s because dead foods turn off higher levels of awareness and keep people focused on whatever distractions you can feed their brains: Television, violence, fear, sports, sex and so on.

The one other thing Mike and the Guardian left out when it comes too switched off brains is fluoride in the water. Fluoride depletes lithium from the body and causes depression. Add dead unhealthy foods and it is easy to see how we end up with orthorexia nervosa.

The truth is that we need as many people eating healthy food as possible so that someone has enough clarity to help people change or to help change our system so that we increase the number of people that demand healthy food to prevent as much disease as possible.

The 10 Worst Foods You Can Eat

There are many more bad foods besides the ones I mention here, but this is an interesting group. I have added two more at the end as a bonus.

If you can think of other foods that are terrible and would like to start a new list, I will be glad to do another newsletter on what you would like covered.

  1. Soup – TV ads claim that “soup is good food” but this is just not true for the major brands. Most soups are made from the cheapest ingredients and made to taste better by adding large amounts of salt, Trans fatty acids and MSG. The MSG is usually not listed on the label as the government allows industrial food corporations to hide MSG with terms like natural flavorings, yeast extract and many others.
  2. Bacon – Bacon as sold in stores is very unhealthy because of the nitrites and nitrates used in the processing. Also, all meat sold in grocery stores has been tortured, raised in their own pooh, fed and injected with hormones, antibiotics and many other chemicals. Fats are healthy in preventing cancer if they come from healthy animals, but the fats from bacon and other processed meats are terrible.
  3.  Hamburger – fast-food processed burgers are loaded with health problems. They can have 1010 calories, 71 grams of unhealthy fat, 1580 grams of salt (unhealthy salt), and 12 grams of sugar. This can make you tired besides making you feel like you don’t want to work after lunch and this does not include a drink or fries.
  4. Baked treats – cupcakes, twinkies (which are mostly chemicals), Little Debbie, and much, much more, are high is Trans fats, high fructose corn syrup and other sugars – lots and lots of calories with no nutrition.
  5. Classic potato chips – high in Trans fats, calories, high in salt (crave something to drink), and other chemicals that are addictive. They are loaded with cancer causing chemicals. And of course empty carbohydrates.
  6. Hot dogs and processed lunch meats – I have heard the words “mystery meats” because you have no idea what is in the meat. I had a friend who worked in a meat packing plant years ago who saw them grind up the female cows udders into the bologna. I have found a company that makes chicken hot dogs by grinding up chicken bones and cartilage in making their products. This does not include the massive amounts of salt, MSG, nitrates and nitrites that are put into the “meat” for flavoring, but also cause cancer.
  7. French fries – can be somewhat healthier if they are fried with healthy lard that is not from industrial produced pigs (also coconut oil), and if they are real potatoes; but today, most oils are genetically engineered (cotton seed, soy, canola, etc) and the potatoes are a pureed potato product held together with a type of glue. This is not healthy or appetizing.
  8. Doughnuts – what a collection of Trans fatty acids, processed grain, high fructose corn syrup and sugar. There is nothing in this that is beneficial.
  9. Soft drinks and juices – These are loaded with high fructose corn syrup and sugar that are horrible for your health. With the soft drinks, you also add phosphoric acid that will eat rust off of metal, dissolve metal line nails and dissolve meat in a bowl that is covered with the drink. The soft drink also has massive amounts of sodium (salt) to make you thirstier so you will consume more of their products. Drinking one 44 ounce soft drink per day will increase your body weight by 20 pounds each year.

10. Fried Catfish – Catfish is a bottom feed that, for the most part, is raised in Mississippi in ponds/lakes. They eat and swim in each others pooh and are fed genetically engineered grains. When prepared, they are fried in vegetable oil that becomes Trans fatty acids and dipped in genetically engineered corn (85 % of all corn in the US is GE). Also, if not drained of oil, the amount of Trans fatty acids is even worse. Catfish also have no beneficial fatty acids like salmon.

Honorable mention for worst foods is pizza. The dough is made from bleached flour without any nutrients, tomato based sauce that is loaded with MSG and other flavor enhancers, cheese from cows that are locked up in covered barns, standing in their own pooh 24 hours a day (with their tails cut off so they will not sling pooh on the cow next to them). The largest pizza chain in the USA just got caught putting silicone in their cheese so it has more stiffness to it.

The final mention today of the worst foods is macaroni and cheese. Macaroni is made with extrusion, high temperature and high pressure (this is like cereal) that destroy all nutrients including the artificial vitamins and minerals. The rest of this is cheese. The “cheese” has almost never seen a cow much less being produced by a cow.
