Taco Bell gets Sued – Where’s the Beef?

The word has spread across the internet: An Alabama law firm has filed a class action lawsuit against Taco Bell in California, saying its meat fails to meet the definition of beef set forth by the U.S. government. The lawsuit claims Taco Bell’s meat cannot be honestly advertised as “beef” because it claims tests showed the meat was only 35% beef, not the 70% beef required by federal standards.

“It’s mainly soy and oats and there’s lots of other stuff in there that I don’t even know how to pronounce,” said attorney Dee Miles.

I believe they, the lawyers, have missed an important point. I understand they are comparing “beef” to soy, oats or whatever, but first you need to define meat VS beef.

It is my understanding that a large part of Taco Bell’s meat is not really meat. When meat is removed from the bone, there is always a little bit of meat left behind attached to the tendons which are attached to the bone. To remove the meat and tendon, a chemical is put on the bone that releases everything. The combination of meat and tendon is then cooked and ground up (not necessarily in that order) and then declared meat.

According to the lawsuit, this product – meat/tendon/beef – is then processed as reported below.

Taco Bell’s tacos, burritos and other Mexican menu items advertised with beef actually contain a filling of mostly non-meat substances like “isolated oat product,” according to the lawsuit filed last week in a California federal court.

“The ‘chicken’ and ‘carne asada steak’ served by Taco Bell is, in fact, chicken or carne asada steak,” the lawsuit says. “The ‘seasoned beef,’ however, is not beef.”

Taco Bell simmers 100 percent U.S. Department of Agriculture-inspected beef in a “proprietary blend of seasonings and spices” to give it a signature taste and texture, Taco Bell President Greg Creed said in a statement.

All seasoning ingredients are listed on the website, he said.

“Unfortunately, the lawyers in this case elected to sue first and ask questions later — and got their ‘facts’ absolutely wrong,” Creed said.

Unfortunately, the lawyers/law suit did not identify ingredients in the “proprietary blend”. We can only guess at some of these, but I am pretty sure of the following as it comes from their website.

• Autolyzed Yeast Extract (which contains MSG, an excitotoxin)This makes poor quality “food” taste better – tricks your taste buds
• Red #40, Blue #1, Yellow #6 artificial colors
Where do these come from?  coal tar derivatives (same as “Sweet and Low”)

• Corn syrup solidsHigh Fructose Corn Syrup – a poison in its own right (25% has mercury in it) and it comes from GMO corn that is toxic.
• Partially Hydrogenated Corn Oil
There is not anything healthy about this. All hydrogenated vegetable oils become trans fatty acids and still bad because of GMO corn.
• Soy Protein
There is only one thing unhealthier than corn oil and that is anything to do with soy. Soy is 95 % GMO. I forgot to mention that  GMO’s were designed to use more herbicides than other plants; also, don’t forget the pesticides and chemical fertilizers
• Propylene Glycol Alginate
There is nothing like a product in your food similar to antifreeze

 • Dimethylpolysiloxane (an anti-foaming chemical)  a favorite of Tyson chicken, beef and pork. McDonalds probably uses the most of this product in the world for its chicken McNuggets

Taco Bell responded quickly, saying their meat was “88% beef” and that they buy the same brand of beef sold in supermarkets — Tyson Foods.

The truth be known, almost no one has “meat” any more toxic and unhealthy than Tyson.

This a quote from Mike Adams the “Health Ranger”

Suddenly we care about food quality at Taco Bell?

But seriously, the bigger issue here isn’t Taco Bell’s meat ingredients as much as it is Americans’ dietary complacency: If you eat at Taco Bell, you don’t CARE what you’re eating. Why should it matter if it’s meat, or soy, or even recycled rat turds? The very fact that somebody is eating at Taco Bell already establishes they’re not very interested in the purity, origins and nutritional potency of the foods they consume.

This is the same scenario if you are eating food bought at a regular grocery store and purchasing processed foods.

Sometimes you are out and you just can’t eat healthy food. So what can you do? The key here is to minimize the risk of chemicals and toxins.

The first thing to do is avoid Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut (all owned by the same corporation), Mc Donald’s and similar food dispensers. The chicken and meat in all of these stores are pumped up with MSG, HFCS, salt and water as a minimum. Since it is impossible to avoid all of these products, you need to minimize. Most fast-food places super-size everything, which makes being healthy harder; look for salads and limit yourself to small portions of foods. On eating salads, try to get olive oil and some type of vinegar. If you are near a Chick-Fil-A, you can get 4 nuggets (these are also not reconstituted) to reduce your volume. Sometimes you can get a wrap that has fewer carbohydrates – grilled and leave the sauce off. Soup is usually not a good idea because of MSG.

The best places for good food are those that use organic local food that is grown and prepared by loving people who care for your good health. These restaurants are hard to find, but the good news is that they are sprouting up all over the USA. Look for them; it is worth the extra time and effort.

So, what is the take-home message from this entire Taco Bell law suit? Who cares, but it will still be fun to see how this plays out.

Ammonia-Treated Pink Slime Burger & Processed Meats

Yummy, Yummy in my tummy – from an old 1960’s song. I don’t quite think Pink Slime burger and nitrosamines is what they had in mind in this old song.

This newsletter is from two different stories this week, but they both have to do with unhealthy meat, so I have put them together in one article.

The first article is about processed meat that includes hot dogs, bologna, ham, bacon and processed meats like turkey, salami, roast beef, sausage and hamburger.

Hot dogs, bologna, salami, pastrami, pepperoni and other similar meats are made up of all the unwanted junk left over after the better cuts of meat are removed. These parts can be the udder, testicles and other leftovers. They add chemicals like MSG, High Fructose Corn Syrup and other unimaginable chemicals to improve the taste. I have read about chicken hot dogs being made of ground up chicken bones and cartilage. A big part of the chemicals are the nitrates that are added to these meats as a preservative, coloring and flavoring. Nitrates found in processed meats are very often converted into nitrosamines that are associated with an increased risk of certain cancers, like colon cancer. Also, cooking on a grill at high temperatures can convert nitrate and nitrites to nitrosamines.

A solution to this is to cook on an indirect fire, like the Holland Grill, besides not eating products ground-up by someone you don’t know. My solution is that I don’t eat anything ground up by someone I can’t meet and talk with at a store. Because of this, I eat sausage from Central Market and Whole Foods. I also produce our own all-beef sausage without toxic chemicals and sugar/HFCS. I  use a healthy sea salt like Real Salt from Redmond minerals in Redmond, Utah.

Bacon and ham are another problem. These have been made for thousands of years in a way to preserve them for food throughout the year. For the most part, a country ham and bacon were treated with salt to dehydrate the meat and with smoke to add flavor. Nitrates and nitrites were added to make the meat a pinkish color, considered to be more visually appealing, but when cooking, the meats were soaked in water and then parboiled before frying. This process removed a lot of the salt and nitrates before frying, thus eliminating many of the toxic, cancer-causing chemicals.

Today, there are preparations that don’t use nitrates and nitrites and the meat is tasty and not unhealthy.

When it comes to hamburger, anything goes as far as food manufacturers are concerned. As long as you don’t die in the first 30 days, anything goes. This brings me to another article about pink slime “burger” that appeared this week on the internet.

The article appeared in the Daily Kos / ByJennifer Poole.

You’re not going to believe what you’ve been eating the last few years (thanks, Bush! thanks meat industry lobbyists!) when you eat a McDonald’s burger (or the hamburger patties in kids’ school lunches) or buy conventional ground meat at your supermarket.

According to today’s New York Times, The “majority of hamburger” now sold in the U.S. contains fatty slaughterhouse trimmings “the industry once relegated to pet food and cooking oil,” “typically including most of the material from the outer surfaces of the carcass” that contains “larger microbiological populations.”

This “nasty pink slime,” as one FDA microbiologist called it, is now wrung in a centrifuge to remove the fat, then treated with AMMONIA to “retard spoilage” and turned into “a mash-like substance frozen into blocks or chips”.

This saves THREE CENTS a pound off production costs, making the company, Beef Products Inc., a fortune – $440 million/year in revenue. Ain’t that something?

And to emphasize: this pink slime isn’t just in fast food burgers or free lunches for poor kids.

With the U.S.D.A.’s stamp of approval, the company’s processed beef has become a mainstay in America’s hamburgers. McDonald’s, Burger King and other fast-food giants use it as a component in ground beef, as do grocery chains. The federal school lunch program used an estimated 5.5 million pounds of the processed beef last year alone.

Bush’s U.S.D.A. also allowed these “innovators” to get away with listing the ammonia as “a processing agent” instead of by name. They also OK’d the processing method — and later exempted the hamburger from routine testing of meat sold to the general public — strictly based on the company’s claims of safety, which were not backed by any independent testing.

Because the ammonia taste was so bad (“It was frozen, but you could still smell ammonia,” said Dr. Charles Tant, a Georgia agriculture department official. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”), the company started using a less alkaline ammonia treatment, and now we know — thanks to testing done for the school lunch program — that the nasty stuff isn’t even reliably killing the pathogens.

Government and industry records obtained by The New York Times show that in testing for the school lunch program, E. coli and salmonella pathogens have been found dozens of times in Beef Products meat, challenging claims by the company and the U.S.D.A. about the effectiveness of the treatment. Since 2005, E. coli has been found 3 times and salmonella 48 times, including back-to-back incidents in August in which two 27,000-pound batches were found to be contaminated. The meat was caught before reaching lunch-rooms’ trays.

In July, school lunch officials temporarily banned their hamburger makers from using meat from a Beef Products facility in Kansas because of salmonella — the third suspension in three years, records show. Yet the facility remained approved by the U.S.D.A. for other customers.

Presented by The Times with the school lunch test results, top [U.S.D.A.] department officials said they were not aware of what their colleagues in the lunch program had been finding for years.

The New York Times article today has a rather innocuous headline, “Safety of beef processing method is questioned.”

I’d say this quote from the U.S.D.A. department microbiologist, Gerald Zirnstein, who called the processed beef “pink slime” in a 2002 e-mail message to colleagues, represents the situation better: “I do not consider the stuff to be ground beef and I consider allowing it in ground beef to be a form of fraudulent labeling.”

So what can you do to protect yourself and your family?

First of all, stop eating this crap and don’t let your kids eat in the school lunch programs. These shoddy products are bad, but there are more things in the school lunch program that are as bad as the above products.

Don’t eat anything ground-up unless you know the person who is doing it – hamburger, hot dogs, sausages, pepperoni, salami, etc.

When it comes to chicken, beef and pork, buy from local people you can get to know and trust.

Local food, whether it is meat protein, vegetables or fruit, is the way to go. Organic is always better if you know the people. Organic from 1500 miles away is probably not healthy (apples, oranges, avocadoes etc. are exceptions to this rule).  Foods that are less-processed and less-cooked are always better for your health.

I am tired of the Media Blaming the Public for Obesity and Doctors “We don’t Know” When it comes to Disease

We live in an age when almost no one takes blame when they do something wrong and or they blame someone else for what they did wrong.

We have a gated/guarded community close to where we live, and they had someone vandalizing unoccupied homes. This happened about six times, so the security people set a house up and waited for the vandals. It ended up that three boys were doing the damage and the security people took the boys to the local sheriff’s office where their parents were called to come and bail them out. Two of the parents were surprised and shocked that their kids would something like this and were ready to punish their boys on the spot as they took them home.

The third mother got all indignant and yelling that her little dear would never do something like vandalism and she was going to sue the security police and the sheriff’s department. The little vandal was caught in the commission of a crime and the mother denied it could happen.

Does this sound familiar?

If you are obese or at least over weight, just watch the media on a daily basis as they do stories or interviews with skinny anorexic people that probably complain about being fat when they have gained 5 pounds. The implications are always that we don’t exercise, and we eat too much. Tommy Thompson said that “We just eat too dare much”. Unfortunately the media will never report that the “deck” is stacked against everyone that eats food from a grocery store.

The most blatant conspiracy involving overweight people is soft drinks headed up by Coke Cola. A 20 oz soft drink has 55 milligrams of salt, NaCl, plus high fructose corn syrup. The HFCS is in the drink to cover up the taste of the salt and the salt is in the drink to make you thirsty so you will drink more.

What is the problem with HFCS that is in almost every processed food we buy in regular grocery stores?

If I gave you a bunch of candy bars made with sugar and ask you to eat them until you wanted to quit, you might eat a couple but because your sugar level went up, your insulin system with leptin would kick in and send a signal to your brain that you had enough and you would quit eating the candy bars.

If on another day I gave you a bunch of candy bars made with high fructose corn syrup and told you to eat until you didn’t want any more you would eat and eat and we don’t know when you would stop because the leptin and insulin system would never send a signal to your brain to stop.

My point of this is that if you or I are at fault over something then we ought to stand up and do the right thing but when it is not our fault or when only part of something is not our fault then we need to fight back.

Agriculture and food manufactures are stacking the deck against us and they are creating disease at our expense just so they can make massive amounts of money. I am not opposed to making money but not when integrity is lost. A lot of people believe that their government is protecting them from unsavory corporations but most of the time they are protecting the multinational multibillion dollar corporations and slamming the small companies who do not have enough to compete with government lawyers.

To add insult to injury our medical system that is run by drug corporations keep lying to us. If you ask a doctor what causes cancer you will get a blank look and he or she will say “We don’t know” but the truth is there is a cause for everything but it is not in doctors or drug corporations best economic interest to cure you or prevent.

We see ads on TV for drugs for fibromyalgia and the narrator says “Thought to be caused by over active nerves”. What a line! “I am taking a “Statin drug” for my cholesterol because diet and exercise did not work. This is bull “stuff”. The reason diet and exercise did not work is that they were told not to eat fat (there are healthy fats and unhealthy fats) so they ate carbohydrates instead. Folks, carbohydrates are the direct cause of cholesterol and triglycerides. Doctors, through drug corporations don’t want you to know the truth because you might get well and not need so many expensive drugs.

Obesity and diabetes is another example of a failed system making billions of dollars over your misfortune. If the food was not spiked with excessive salt and high fructose corn syrup (or excessive consumption of fruit with high fructose) we would not be having these problems. Child hood cancer and obesity are running hand in hand and medicine is doing nothing but writing prescriptions for drugs.

Cancer is made to be a big mysterious disease that no one knows how to cure but the truth be known cancer is just a few cells gone wrong (we all have cancers cells in our bodies from day to day or from time to time). The problem is that the cancer cells get into a body that has little quality immune system, flooded with sugar, MSG, and other chemicals and the cancer cells go nuts growing with wild abandon when they should be killed by our bodies. As they grow and are finally discovered by medicine, the big chemicals (chemo), knives (scalpels), and radiation are brought in to kill the cancer cells and most of the good surrounding cells. After a few months when you are about to expire or run out of money you are told there is nothing modern medicine can do for you so prepare to meet your maker.

What is the solution? In my opinion we need integrity in government and corporations.

We need a healthy food system, a healthy agriculture system, an honest media system that tells the truth no matter what their advertisers say. I don’t think this is likely to happen so what should we do to help ourselves and change the system.

Don’t eat anything that is advertised on TV; eat local food even if we have to go “underground” to hide our actions from the government and greedy corporations. Complain and put pressure on corporations like Walmart, Kroger, Monsanto (probably the most evil corporation in the world) that we want to be treated in a healthful way.

The most important thing to do is get cheap out of your mindset when it comes to food. The politicians want cheap food so you will spend the “extra” money left over from food on things like new cars, big screen TV’s, houses that we can’t afford so that our brains are so warped with distractions that we will not realize they are “shafting” us. The is like the old Jerry Reid song “She got all the gold and he got the shaft”

I don’t mean that we should not have nice things but we need to put quality food at the top of the important things in life and stop thinking cheap. When we go to restaurants and grocery stores we are always surrounded with cheap. Save ten cents here and a nickel there but while we are doing it we buy soft drinks, processed “foods” and chemically dead fruits and vegetable from all over the world instead of locally grown healthy food.

It is time to change your little corner of the world. If everyone takes one little step to improvement we can change the world and our health.

Why would anyone think it is cool to be sick and on a bunch of medicine that makes you worse, not better?

Remember that all disease is preventable with a healthy life style no matter what your doctor or the TV says.
